Cloth Artists (CoCA) opens new exhibit
"Words to Live By" at Laurel Lake Gallery
July 18, 2008 – Since 2000, a group of Northeast Ohio fiber artists has been sharing ideas and exhibiting under the collective name of Contemporary Cloth Artists (CoCA). These artists' medium is quilts and what they call "creative cloth," traditionally feminine crafts that the artists are extending into the realm of expressive fine art.
Their latest show, "Words to Live By," incorporates words and images as well as traditional patterns, into colorful work they're describing as "part textile art, part poetry slam."
The show will be on display at The Gallery of Laurel Lake, 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson from August 1 - 31, 2008. Admission is free and open to the public daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Many CoCA members are professional studio artists who regularly exhibit in major art quilt exhibitions such as Quilt National, Visions, Fiberart International, Art Quilts at the Sedgewick, Art Quilts at the Whistler and more. CoCA members come from various backgrounds – artists and teachers of fiber arts, silk painting, innovative quilt making, wearable art and surface design – but all share the love of fiber and the creative arts.
CoCa meets monthly at the Beachwood branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Membership, though limited, is open to serious fiber artists. For further information, go to www.contemporaryclothartists.org .
The Gallery at Laurel Lake offers free exhibit space to professional and amateur artists and photographers every month, as a public service to support the arts in Northeast Ohio.
