Retired 'elves' make toys, knit caps for charity

November 10, 2010 -- Christmas may be just around the corner, but at Laurel Lake, dozens of “elves” have been working their magic for months to create handmade gifts for local children in need.

Working in partnership with Summit County Children’s Services, Laurel Lake residents who belong to the community’s Woodworker and Needlecraft clubs have made dozens of toys and hundreds of warm winter caps for underserved children in the Greater Akron area.

The community's annual "Caps for Kids" hat drive was started 20 years ago by resident Margaret DeWitt. Every November, knitters decorate the Laurel Lake Christmas tree with more than 400 handcrafted winter hats that will eventually be delivered to Summit County Children's Services.

Resident and staff needleworkers create most of the caps, but some also come from outside the community. The hats are knitted from color skeins of yarn donated by the bagfull.

In addition to hats, some scarves and mittens also make it to the tree. All items will be delivered early in December, in plenty of time for Christmas and cold weather.

Two years ago, the  Woodworkers put their newly remodeled woodworking shop to good use by building wooden toys to place underneath the tree.

This year's array of hand painted wooden toys ranges in size from peg games and pull toys to beautiful rocking horses that have been “kid tested” for durability by a resident’s grandchild.  The toys will also be donated to Summit County Children's Services.
