University Circle offers "red hot" distance learning programs
at Laurel Lake in January
December
27, 2011 -- University Circle, Inc. and Laurel Lake Retirement Community
have announced the following Distance Learning programs for January,
made possible through a grant provided by The Laurel Lake
Foundation.
These programs are free and open to the public at 200 Laurel Lake

"COMPOSER
SPOTLIGHT: GIUSEPPE VERDI"

Live from The Cleveland Institute of Music. Verdi
is considered by many to be the most influential Italian opera composer
in music history. This session explores the contributions of this
operatic giant and includes excerpts from Aida, Nabucco, Rigoletto
and other operas.

Live from The Cleveland Museum of Art. Italy
has a long and rich tradition in the visual arts, but what do these
images communicate about the country's history? Survey Italy's artistic
heritage by exploring why particular subjects were depicted in
sculptures, paintings and decorative arts. Students will learn how
factors such as patronage and subject matter convey some of the ideals
and events important to residents throughout Italy in the last two
thousand years. The objects shown range from decorative arts made by the
ancient Etruscans to a print created by Boccioni, a proponent of the
Italian Futurist movement in the early twentieth century.

Live from The Cleveland Institute of Music. The
music and culture of Spain is explored through the Flamenco experience.
Understand the use of improvisation, vocal style, and different styles
of cante. View artist representations of Flamenco and explore this
changing art form through the interpretations of some of its most
prominent artists.

Live from The Cleveland Museum of Art. This
program features paintings by artists working from or born in Spain.
Learn about Renaissance, Baroque and Modern Spanish art along with the
cultural and historical context of the works highlighted. Many of the
artists in the CMA’s collection—El Greco, Goya and Picasso, for
example—are among the best known in western art history.
