CONTACT Laurel Lake and University Circle to present "Nuclear Weapons, Iran and the US" March
28, 2011 -- Laurel Lake and University
Circle, Inc. will present a live videoconference with Cleveland Council
on World Affairs speaker Dr. Arya A. Amirie on Tuesday, April 5,
10:00 a.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive.
The event is free, but space is limited. Call 330-653-2252 to register.
Providing
a breakdown of nuclear weapons and U.S.-Iranian relations, Dr. Amirie
will address the potential effects of a nuclear Iran on political
stability in the Middle East, the security of the Persian Gulf states
and Israel, the flow of Persian Gulf oil supplies to the world, the
hostility between Shi’ites and Sunnis, the non-proliferation treaty
and how the vast majority of Iranians perceive Americans. He will
provide a historical overview of Iran’s relationship with its
neighbors, its own regime, and a view of how relations can be restored
between the U.S. and Iran. Dr. Amirie, well known as
an insightful speaker, has spent the last thirty years in Southern
California teaching at both UCLA and UC Irvine about the Middle East. As
a native of Iran and a former foreign policy advisor to the Shah, his
analysis of the current controversy surrounding the country’s
perceived attempts to develop nuclear weapons presents both a Middle
Eastern as well as a Western perspective. Dr. Amirie is the founder
and volunteer director of the Civil Service Academy, specifically aimed
to train minorities for careers in law enforcement. He served as a
foreign policy advisor to the Shah of Iran from 1973 to 1979 and Middle
East advisor to President Ronald Reagan from 1979 to 1983. Dr. Amirie is
the founder and was executive director for over six years of the Iranian
Institute for International Political and Economic Studies in Tehran to
advise the Shah on foreign policy. This institute was developed after
Dr. Amirie established and directed the Kent State and Pahlavi
Universities’ Exchange Program. Author of three books on
Middle East Politics, five books in Law Enforcement, and an
Autobiography: Unparalleled Journey: From Raising Lambs to Advising
World Leaders, and author of many articles on issues concerning the
Middle East, Dr. Amirie brings unique knowledge to clarify Iran’s and
the Middle East’s present situation.
